For most of us, Paris means sitting in a café, watching others stroll by, and reflecting on la belle vie. But what lies behind the myth of Paris as the city of intellectuals?

Program:

Explore the intellectual heart of Paris on this guided walk through the historic Latin Quarter. From Gothic landmarks to legendary cafés, this tour brings together literature, history, and Parisian lifestyle in one of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods.

We begin at Saint-Michel and walk to the impressive Notre-Dame Cathedral, famously revived in the public imagination by Victor Hugo’s Notre-Dame de Paris. Learn how literature helped save one of France’s greatest monuments.

Just across the river, we visit the legendary Shakespeare & Company bookshop, once a meeting point for writers like Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce. Experience the atmosphere of 1920s Paris and its vibrant expatriate scene.

Winding through medieval streets, we continue to the Panthéon, final resting place of France’s literary giants including Voltaire, Rousseau, Émile Zola, and Alexandre Dumas. Nearby, the historic Sorbonne introduces us to postwar and modern voices such as Albert Camus and Marguerite Duras.

We stroll through the elegant Luxembourg Garden before heading down to Boulevard Saint-Germain, where Parisian café culture comes alive. Our tour ends at Café de Flore, once the headquarters of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir.

Along the way, we make frequent short stops: What stories lie behind these well-known monuments? Which anecdotes about the Parisian intelligentsia truly belong here? And how can you tell the price of a coffee simply by looking at the chairs outside a café?

By the end, you will discover whether you are more the type for Café de Flore or Les Deux Magots. Perhaps afterwards you will sit down for a coffee on your own and watch the flâneurs pass by. One thing is certain, you will find yourself saying: Oh, la vie est belle en France!
